DISTRICT 6650 HEARING MISSION
DISTRICT HEARING MISSION - DG TIRPAK’s JOURNAL
DG Richard Tirpak and his wife joined Rotarian Dr. Sheryl Kosicek Figliano and Hearing Missions Foundation to Guatemala as a representative of District 6650!
Our District partnered with Dr. Figliano, the Boardman Rotary, and Hearing Missions Foundation to help bring the gift of hearing to children with profound and severe hearing loss.
The financial response of Rotarians and Rotary Clubs in this District to this partnership is amazing.

April 7th
Sunrise over the building across the way was a little hazy. Multiple fires around the outskirts of the city didn't help the environment; the government closed all the schools because of the poor air quality. But, it cleared OK for today's TRAINING DAY! A bus took us to the "hospital" where we will be treating the children and adults. LIFE SHOCK #1: the marked amounts of traffic and the horrible roads. LIFE SHOCK #2: the conditions at a "hospital" in a third world nation ( made Stark Animal Hospital look better than the Cleveland Clinic!). But several hours of training in a non A/C building followed by a good bit more in an open sided pavilion where we will work, and we are ready for patients tomorrow. Several times through the morning, I listened to the sound of an unusual bird singing near the pavilion. It occurred to me that that bird song could be the first sounds ever heard by a young child tomorrow. LIFE SHOCK #3: the numbers of armed guards always near us! In fact, the numbers of armed guards visible throughout the city. I probably saw 10 men carrying shotguns just on our trip back. Open carry is not an issue here. And, I would love to have the concertina wire and razor wire concession here. Early retirement! It makes it easy to understand why our government lists, " consider an alternative travel destination" as advise about Guatemala.

April 8th
Monday night was to be a "dinner" for the volunteers. And, I suppose it was. But really, the "guests of honor" were the 20 or so "patients" whose hearing aids were refitted and adjusted beforehand. They were chosen, I believe, because they were all "old patients" who have been treated since they were children. It was interesting to watch Dr. Figliano move from one to the other making sure everything was done "just right". I got tired just watching her. After all the patients were done, there were some nice testimonials and a short live concert. Finally, the patients thanked all the volunteers with a sunflower-like flower. As nice as that gesture was, it paled next to the smiles, the hugs, and the "high fives" from these patients at the end of their treatment. They showed that sentiment that seems to be rarer all the time, true gratitude! Something that they lacked in life, the gift of hearing, was provided to them by someone as "just" a gesture of love and kindness.

April 9th
Today was the day that "the magic happens". At least that is what Dr. Figliano said; the first day of seeing patients. We saw about 130 patients, better than 90% were children. I only cried 3 times in the first 90 minutes. Kids, here for a hearing aid, and maybe a future. Our team saw Jose Miguel, Layti, Penelopi, Dilen, Virginia, Martin, and quite a few more. They are all names I will forget in a few days. But I will never forget the smiles, the big brown, happy eyes,....the hugs. The kids come to us for better efficiency, with some financial help for their travels. One little girl started out at 3:00AM for her chance to hear! A little girl we saw was only mildly deaf in her left ear, but had no ear canal in her right. But, we all watched the children and their reactions. I started watching the parent's reaction. I can only imagine the emotions the parents feel when they know that their child can now hear. That their child may have a normal future. That they didn't fail to provide for their family! I thank God for all my fellow Rotarians who helped show these people "the magic of Rotary"!

This is my new amigo, Luis. Luis is blind.....he teaches English at the School for the Deaf and Blind here. He took the day off to assist with the Hearing Mission. Despite his problem ( Luis cannot end a sentence without a laugh), he does pretty well! I told him my Spanish joke and he told me his English joke. We laughed about my attempts to communicate in Spanish and he corrected most of my feeble attempts. And we talked. I gave him a deck of UNO cards in Braille. Funny how you can make a friend in 4 or 5 hours.

A message from Boardman Rotarian Dr. Sheryl Figliano…
Our first official mission day in Guatemala was a success, leaving us both humbled and inspired. We had the privilege of assisting 135 patients on their transformative journey to better hearing. The genuine joy reflected in the beautiful smiles of our new Guatemalan friends filled our hearts to the brim, affirming the profound impact of our mission. Witnessing the sheer delight on children's faces as they heard for the first time was nothing short of magical—a moment of pure, unfiltered happiness.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every volunteer whose unwavering dedication and tireless efforts made today's success possible. Together, we're not just restoring hearing, but also spreading hope and joy to the people of Guatemala

April 10th
Guatemala is a developing nation. I am just not sure what it is developing into. With a population about 200,000 greater than Chicago, it looks like the homicide rate might be more than 100 times as high. It is a dangerous place. So, when I decided not to repeat a post of a lot of children's pictures, I was wrong. Because these children live in this reality. And, nature chose to put them at an even greater disadvantage: deafness. The Hearing Mission is working to help these children have a future, and hopefully a future which will better the course of this nation. Hopefully, we will better their lives. And hopefully, they will better their country. Please, don't just see the face of a kid. See a child who is part of a family who needed help. And the donations of Rotary Clubs and generous Rotarians were a large part of giving that help. SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
This mission trip has shown me a lot that I suppose I knew existed, but didn't need to see. Extreme poverty, not only barbed wire almost everywhere, but often electrified barbed wire, armed guards almost everywhere...today I saw an armed guard sitting atop a Coca Cola truck. But then there are things one might expect to see...and to be glad for it. This lady brought her 2 daughters today, the older to be treated and the younger to warm your heart.
This young fellow came to the "clinic" today. His hearing loss is so profound that he is "almost" beyond help (certainly beyond help in Guatemala). This 45 seconds of video explains The Hearing Mission.

April 11th
Today was the last day of seeing patients. Since it was "only" a half day, we saw about 80 people. That is as opposed to the 130 on the first day and 110 on the second. Funny, with taking everything down and packing, the day was as long as Day 1 and 2! But, no kids pics today. Today is about the people that "Made the Magic of Rotary"; a few Rotarians and a goodly group who don't know they are Rotarians at heart! A group who took their time and spent their money for airfare, hotel rooms, and meals, in order to help improve the future for over 300 people.

Doing good around the world! Please watch the video

After his fitting and adjustments, a little boy gave me this card he made, along with a smile and a hug. My good friends can look at it....and I might let Marcia touch it!

April 12th
As a thank you from the Guatemalan partners of this mission trip, they organized excursions for us for today and tomorrow. Today (Friday), we took a 90 minute (+/-) bus ride to Antigua Guatemala. This is an ancient town dating back before 1500 and served as the third capital of Guatemala. It is in the southern part of the country and is surrounded by volcanoes and the Sierra Madre Mountains. It is also kind of a quaint tourist town. Tomorrow is a hike up a volcano.

April 13th
The last day of the Hearing Mission Trip to Guatemala. We were "gifted" a trip to volcan de Pacaya. A beautiful drive to a very nice spot, topped off by a 4.5 Km walk up and down a mountain! This was NOT an easy walk. However, the views and the sights were great. The hike starts at about 6200 ft. above see level and ends at about 7400 ft. Add a 30 to 35mph wind and you have some real fun! From one vantage point, we could see volcan de Fuego erupting! Tomorrow morning starts the trip home and the flights will allow some real soul searching about this experience!

Final Thoughts
I have given a lot of thought to the last 8 days in Guatemala. In some ways, it was what I expected; but, in others, not what I expected at all. All in all, though, I am so glad the Mission occurred and so, so glad I was able to be a part of it.
There is no shortage of good causes in our world. Many choose to support a cause with a check; and it is gracious and appreciated. But, now and again, you find someone who supports a cause with passion! What I saw last week was a group with a passion. The examples would be too difficult to enumerate or explain, but it was obvious to see. A couple of dozen people who used their vacation time or took off work, paid for their flight to Guatemala, paid for their lodging and meals, and spent the days working to bring hearing to people in Guatemala. People who otherwise had no hope. I pray that people of passion will always be amongst us.
The two pictures? The one is a little girl with hope. She came to the clinic deaf and left with the ability to hear. Now, she has to learn to communicate. The other is a little girl skipping as she left the clinic. Not to music or lyrics; she has never heard either. She also didn’t hear that there was nothing that could be done to help her. The picture doesn’t show the tears running down the cheeks of her mother. Or the cheeks of the volunteers who watched them leave. The attempt was there but God had other plans. I pray that people of passion will always be amongst us!
