Bob was born and raised in Gering, Nebraska, a small farming community in Western Nebraska. Jan was born and raised in Minerva, Ohio and can be held responsible for bringing Bob to Ohio in 1966. Bob graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BS Degree in Chemistry and from Kent State University with a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He has been involved in public health for more than 46 years and is recently retired as the Health Commissioner for the Canton City Board of Health. Jan and Bob have been married more than 41 years and have two sons, Jeff and Ben, and a daughter, Becki. All live in Stark or Medina counties and there are two grandsons, Brian and Eric, and one granddaughter, Elizabeth. Jan was a professor and Department Head in the Business Division of Stark State College for 25 years. She retired in 2006 after more than 30 years in education.

Bob joined the Rotary Club of Canton in 1972 and served as President in 1995-1996. He and Jan are Paul Harris Fellows, and Bob is a Benefactor and has more than 20 years of perfect attendance. He has served his club in many capacities and has served District 6650 as an Assistant Governor and as Chair of the Vocational Avenue Committee.
