District Governor Joe's Monthly Message

DG Joe's Message
May 2016

Well, May has come and gone, and so almost is the Rotary year of Be A Gift To The World, and how you have shown your gifts, in talents, accomplishments, as well as financial!

Many great fundraising events are being held, as we progress from the snow(!) of Mid-May to the almost 90 degrees to celebrate Memorial Day with family and friends. It was also a time to remember our Veterans, and the Parade of Flags throughout communities everywhere in the District shows how much they all mean to our Rotarians. Thanks to all who participate in these projects, including the Interactors, Scouts, and Friends of Rotary.

PLEASE READ the results of the Council On Legislation. There are several important changes noted, designed to keep our organization strong and growing.
Thanks to PDGs Dennis Huffman and Bob Pattison for attending, and bringing the good news back to us.

Many exciting changes will be coming to all the clubs, as the new slate of officers prepares for the new Rotary Year, and a seasoned group of officers from this year will be available to help with the transitions, and to assist with a strong kickoff. Thanks to all the current officers, and welcome to the new ones, who will be led by the always fantastic Sieg Warren!

And, don't forget, Outgoing officers, the District will always need your experience.  We always need talent on the committees who do such a fabulous job. Please let Sieg know where you'll want to serve.

As June approaches, more than a dozen Rotarians will be returning from the Seoul Convention, with lots of stories and pictures to share with us, as well as new messages of what's happening in Rotary around the World. I can't wait to hear about it!

We've had a bang up year in Foundation, as Dr. Pete gets ready to let the Committee know about the Global and District grants to be available for more great works in '16-'17. I'm sure we'll be hearing more great stories from Tim and Anna on how you'll be using the funds.

And, it's time for all to be getting ready for the 100th Anniversary Celebration in honor of Arch Klumph and the Foundation in Cleveland. It's going to be a One of a Kind time, and in our backyard!

We'll also be getting to hear more about 'Pegasus'....stay tuned.

And, for me, one more great month to celebrate all your accomplishments with Joan and I. We've enjoyed all the hospitality, fun and friendship. Thanks!

Joe

Paul Harris Fellow Challenge Winner

Paul Harris Fellow Challenge
And The Winner Is…

All of us… The Paul Harris Fellow Challenge has been a great success for our District and the Rotary Foundation. We have raised nearly $24,000 from hundreds of local Rotarians to ‘Do Good in the World’ and here at home. This money returns to our District in 3 years to provide funds for local Club projects and Global Grants.

The Paul Harris Fellow Challenge winner is DG Joe Belinsky who was very generous in his donation. He will receive 1000 Foundation Points. Congratulations Joe.

Next year, the Rotary Foundation celebrates 100 years of changing the lives for millions around the world. Past District Governor George Hays and District Governor Elect Sieglinde Warren have special plans which will be shared with you all.

Thank you for your generosity.

Dominica Relief Update

Thank you to the Rotary Clubs in our District 6650 for helping support relief efforts in the recently hurricane-devastated Caribbean island of Dominica.

Together, we have raised more than $6000 to split between the two Dominica Rotary Clubs of Roseau and Picard/Portsmouth who are making a difference by helping rebuild their communities.

On behalf of fellow Rotarian Dr. Sheryl Figliano who has performed annual missions to give the people of Dominica the gift of hearing and myself, Dr. Peter Apicella, District Foundation Committee Chair, we appreciate all our District does both locally and in the world to make a difference.

News from The Dalton Rotary Club
For the last 12 years, the Dalton Rotary Club has undertaken the Dictionary/Thesaurus project for the 3rd Grade and 5th Grade classes at Dalton Elementary School.  On the morning of Wednesday, Sept 2nd, (4) members of the Rotary Club assembled inside the school to present dictionaries to (79) 3rd graders and thesauruses to (77) 5th graders.  The delivery to the students was early enough to allow the teachers to incorporate the reference books into their lesson plans right away.

The atmosphere among the students during the morning was that of excitement in having something to put in their desks that belonged to them along with the anticipation of being able to learn about the reference book and use it in the classroom with their teachers.

News from The Rotary Club of Rittman
Small but Mighty ! That’s our slogan in Rittman. It is with great pleasure that I can give a quick status report of all the good things going on in our small club. In no particular order. We hosted our first golf outing fund raiser that hit our financial goal to pay for the equipment to support our current project. We are in the process of “Taking Back First Street Park”. What started as a Rotary only idea to put a handicapped accessible swing in the park has turned into a fantastic community wide project. The city is assisting in placement of the swing and many other civic organizations are jumping on board to clean up the park and preserve its historical place in town. This will be an ongoing project for the next 2 years and should bring a lot of awareness to the club !

We have also, kicked off our Interact club with 11 students attending and interest from several more. The students are assisting with park clean up and have brainstormed a couple projects of their own. We also, have several students interesedt in Exchange, RYLA and 4-way test speech.

We have had several excellent events as well. A social security education class hosted by new member Zach Hartzler was well attended.

Best of all in today’s mail we received two RI citations for Membership development !! The first for highest growth rate of females for 2014-15 and highest growth rate in D6650 ! - some things work in your favor when your small :-)

Let all keep growing and serving….Be on the look out for our Poker / Euchre tourney dates to be announced soon.
