DG Joe's Message
September 2015

Summer's over, and it gave us an opportunity to show off all the special events we Rotarians conduct to raise funds, make the World more aware of what we do for it, and complete our 4 Way Test, by having FUN! Congratulations for all you've done, 6650!

Fall's here, and more great opportunities to DO GOOD. I have enjoyed meeting with most of the clubs, finding out about your vocations, and sharing your joy of describing your events and projects. You really leave me uplifted! I can't wait til I've met everyone of you.

Most of your clubs are showing POSITIVE membership increases. Way to go!  I see more Millennials and Women, and that's great. Millennials are thirsting to do more for the World's communities, and Every Woman Brings A Woman is a theme that guarantees growth.

Seoul is calling you to the International Convention.....when will you make your reservations?

Operation WARM continues to provide kids of need with a Winter of being comfortable. Is your Club on Board again? I hope so.

IMPORTANT Foundation news is coming to you from our Champion, Dr. Pete Apicella. Show your support when his program is explained to you...it's exciting!

Our Inbound Students are well entrenched into their new host families, schools, and projects....be sure to welcome them all when they visit your club.....or better still, meet them all at the Overnighters!

Plans are well underway for our 'Rotary Celebrates Tuscarawas County' District Conference on April 29-30, 2016. This is a program for ALL Rotarians in 6650, so mark the dates, and look for 'teasers'.

Here's to another wonderful Rotary October. And....Thanks For All You Do!

DG Joe

Dr. Peter Apicella, your District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair, has arranged for a special video presentation for all District Rotary Clubs to be shown during Rotary Foundation Month in November.

The short video is designed to discuss the Rotary Foundation and our local activities and be inspirational, informative, and memorable.

At the end of the video, Dr. Apicella will announce the “Paul Harris Fellow Challenge.” This is a District-wide contest. For EACH $20 donated to the Rotary Foundation, one of our members will get a chance to win a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition for them, their spouse, or a friend. There is a special envelope to be completed by the member, and it must be returned by January 1st.

Your Club President will be receiving a packet by mail in early October with more information.

Dominica (DOM-i-NEE-kə) is a beautiful volcanic island country in the Caribbean Sea, northwest of Martinique, covered by a rainforest with waterfalls, springs, and rivers, and a population of 72,000. It has one of the lowest per capita gross domestic product rates in the Eastern Caribbean. The main agriculture is bananas, and Dominica has been working toward an eco-tourism destination for the past decade.

Dominica is the island that fellow Rotarian and Boardman audiologist Dr. Sheryl Figliano has performed three annual missions to give people of the island the gift of hearing. Her team has distributed thousands of dollars’ worth of digital hearing aids and batteries in Dominica donated by her patients, Rotarians, and the community at large.

On August 29th, hurricane Erika pelted Dominica with 15 inches of water killing more than 20 people. Mudslides did tremendous damage. The Prime Minister said the damage inflicted by the storm set the island back 20 years. "The extent of the devastation is monumental," he said, “Hundreds of homes, bridges and roads have been destroyed. We have, in essence, to rebuild Dominica."

Annie Edwards, Rotary Club President of Roseau, Dominica, said the damage is devastating but all Rotarians are safe. She has set-up an account to assist in aid efforts.

Dr. Peter Apicella, District Foundation Chair, visited Dominica a few years ago with his wife and was taken by the beauty of the area and the friendliness of the people. Dr. Apicella said, “The community we visited literally washed down hill into the ocean from the storm.”

Drs. Apicella and Figliano would like our District Rotary Club members to donate toward helping the local Rotary Clubs of Dominica assist its people.

Please forward donations c/o Dominica Relief to the Salem Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 1244, Salem, OH 44460. Donations are tax-deductible and will be accepted until October 15, 2015.

Dear all:

We have good news to share with everyone related to the our polio eradication efforts.  Progress continues to be made!

  •          On 21 September 2015, the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) officially verified the worldwide eradication of wild poliovirus type 2 (WPV2).  Convening in Bali, Indonesia, on 21 September 2015, the GCC verified the eradication of this strain after reviewing formal documentation submitted by Member States.  The last detected WPV2 dates to October 1999, from Aligarh, northern India.

  •          The announcement marks a major landmark in the global efforts to eradicate all three wild poliovirus serotypes:  WPV1, WPV2 and WPV3.  WPV3 has not been detected globally since November 2012 (in Nigeria); the only remaining endemic WPV1 strains are now restricted to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Rotarians,

I cannot begin to put into words all the gratitude and thankfulness in my heart for all the prayers and cards I received following my accident in July.  I was shocked that so many individuals and various clubs around the district would reach out to me!!  I know that it is by God's grace that I am alive, and I will see every day as a gift from here forward.  I still have some healing to do and there will be much to get through yet, but I know that God is at work and is faithful!!  I am so blessed to be surrounded by such caring support as my fellow Rotarians have extended to me!!  My heart is overwhelmed with thankfulness - and I know that I will spend my lifetime paying forward all the kindnesses shown to me.  You all truly have been a "gift" to my world!!  God bless you all!!  Thank you more than words can say!!

Salem Rotary Club members have been donating paper products throughout the summer and after a recent meeting, they made a special delivery to the agency which was in need of these items.  Donations tend to decline through the summer months, even though the needs of many in the local community do not.
