DG Joe's Message
WOW! What a great first month for our 2015-16 Rotary year! I had the privilege of inducting the officers of several clubs, and PDGs  Phil and Dallas helped out by doing a few too. Thanks, Phil and Dallas!

Congratulations to all the officers in all the clubs for taking on your leadership roles. You truly define Service Above Self. Your efforts will be much appreciated!

Thanks to the clubs who provided such great and warm welcomes to me on my inaugural visits:  New Philly, Calcutta, Cortland, Struthers, Louisville, Canton South, Canton East, Minerva, Steubenville, Bolivar Zoar,Canfield, Kinsman, Girard, Perry, Dennison, Millersburg and Malvern. My Beautiful Wife Joan accompanied me on several visits, and also enjoyed the hospitality, and the devotion to Rotary and causes espoused by all.
We also got to enjoy the wonderful 60th Anniversary party put on  by the Canfield Rotary. It truly was a delightful Summer evening on the lake. It even included a visit by a Rotaractor from Denton, Texas who described her love for Rotary. Thanks for a memorable evening!

Plans are underway for the 2016 District Conference, under the theme 'Rotary Celebrates Tuscarawas County'. There are 6 clubs in the County, and they are looking to have the rest of the District clubs come to visit, and find out about what a wonderful place it is to visit.

The festivities are being headed up by Chairperson Terri Davis of the Bolivar Zoar (host) club, Vice Chairperson (and Friend of Rotary) Pam Sprowls, and Visitors Bureau and New Philly Rotarian Dee Grossman. Representatives from the other clubs will be contributing to making this a truly memorable event. Thanks to all who are helping.

I'm fortunate to have such great help in spreading the word from this year's Assistant Governor's, including 'newbies' Scott Schulick for Division 1-A; Marj Ginther 1-B; Rodney Sutton 3-B, and Janet Keene 4-A.

And thanks to Deanna Spirko, Bob Schaffner, Kimberly Weiss, Dan Morgan, Lynn Horner and Jim Emmerling for continuing with their leadership. I'm proud to have you all! Thanks to you who attended my visits, and I look forward to hearing about your Division events.

The future District Leadership is strong, too, with Great Teacher Sieglinde Warren as DGE; Super Psych Mike Raulin as DGN, and dual role Spokesperson Supreme newly elected DGND ('18-'19)  Scott Schulick. I appreciate ALL you do!

Dr. Pete Apicella has taken on the yeoman work of District Foundation Chair, as PDG George Hays has been 'kicked upstairs' to spread his  talents through Rotary International. Pete has a strong team  to assist with this Most Important Work.

Succeeding  Sieglinde as District Training Chair is former AG Dr. Tom Montgomery and Co-Chair Vicki Thompson. Thanks, Monty! How can you (and the rest of us) go wrong with Sieg as mentor?

Of course, we won't go broke with PDG (The Queen of Caring) Debbie Esbenshade and Bonnie Davis heading up the Treasury!
One of the strongest Youth Services and Exchange programs in all of Rotary continues to be headed up by Aletha Carver and Bill Wood.

Maranda Saling heads up our newly combined PR and Technology committee, with the aid of DGN Mike Raulin.

PDG Meena Patel is building a strong committee to develop our Global Grant for the development of our assistance to the Solid Rock Therapeutic Riding Academy, near Uniontown. I LOOK FORWARD  TO SEEING  MANY OF YOU THERE AT THE OPEN HOUSE ON SEPTEMBER 26.

I can't mention all the committees at one sitting, but I DO look forward to spotlighting them in future newsletters.

Thanks to all of you!
DG Joe

2015-16 Rotary Foundation District Grants
Rotary Foundation District Grants are designed to fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in our community and communities abroad. Our District will receive nearly $35,000 to distribute to Clubs this year based on requests made earlier this year. These monies will provide support for a War Veteran’s Museum in Canfield; a park flag-pole project in Niles; educational uses in Sugarcreek, Salem, North Canton, Hubbard, Plain Township, Canton, East Palestine; foster care in Canal Fulton, waterless sanitation in Guatemala and Haiti from Alliance; homeless women in Boardman; a dog park in East Palestine; downtown improvements in Newcomerstown; and RYLA support in Louisville.

These funds come from donations made to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund - SHARE which are held by the Foundation for three (3) years. 50% of these funds are then returned to the District for local use and 50% for World Fund use. Grants are made available to District Clubs based on donations from 3 years ago (2012-13) and per Capita giving. Unfortunately, a few Clubs submitted requests for this year, but did not have donations during that Rotary year. Clubs have to ‘Give to Receive’ District Grants. Donations to PolioPlus and the Permanent Fund are not used for this purpose.

There will be more information about giving opportunities as Foundation Month approaches in November. Look for next year’s District Grant Application in early 2016. In 2016, celebration events are being planned to promote the Foundation for its Centennial year. On behalf of the Rotary Foundation, thank you for your support.

Once Again, District 6650 Rotarians Stepped Up
  By PDG Phil Mariola

In the 2014-15 Rotary year the clubs and Rotarians in our district were very generous. We went to the clubs numerous times to ask for their participation in several projects we worked on during the course of the year. They responded in the following manner:

Donations from more than 30 clubs towards the Global Grant to equip the Solid Rock Therapeutic Riding Center (solidrocktrc.com) to better help our military veterans and first responders totaled over $17,000. When added to the monies from our District Fund and districts and clubs in India, as well as the matches from The Rotary Foundation, the grant totaled $113,000.

Donations from clubs and individual Rotarians to the relief effort after the Nepal earthquakes totaled $20,000. We purchased 3 Shelter Boxes at first, then used the remaining donations to buy food and medicine for the earthquake victims. We partnered with a club in Nepal with which we had a previous relationship, to ensure that the money was used where it was most needed.

Donations from 12 clubs for the Apac Water Project in Uganda totaled $9700. That project will provide safe drinking water to many villages in the Apac region. That $9700 actually became $24,250 after two matching grants.

Donations to the End Polio Now campaign in 2014-15 totaled $34,646.00

A big Thank You to all the clubs and Rotarians who demonstrated once again that, in District 6650, Service Above Self is more than just a catchy slogan.

Happy 60th Birthday Rotary Club of Canfield

The Rotary club of Canfield was founded on 20 July 1955.  The sponsor club was the Rotary Club of Youngstown with help from Rotarian Robert Manchester.
The 60th Anniversary celebration was held on Friday, 17 July.  Guest of honor was Charter member James Allen, along with his family: daughter Meg and her daughter; daughter-in-law, Claudia, a former Rotary exchange student from Columbia, and her daughter Christina, who is quite active with Rotaract in Texas.  Jim shared some the history of the Canfield club.  Jim’s late wife Jeannie served as secretary, although she was not a club member.

The 60th anniversary was also the club’s president changeover.  2014-2015 President Sam Boak was recognized by the club with a Paul Harris fellow as was Anthony Nacarato.  Sam presented Paul Harris fellows to Donna Boak, Mike Raulin and Dolores Saunders.  Additional Rotarians earning awards this year were Mike Raulin, Jane Perrett, and Sieglinde Warren.
DG Joe Belinsky inducted new member, Donna Bricker, and installed the 2015-2016 Canfield President Jane Perrett and her board.
