District Governor Joe's Monthly Message

DG Joe's Message
December 2015

I certainly trust that you've all enjoyed this wonderful Holiday season. It's been a fitting tribute to all the good works all have done to make this World a little bit better, every day. Certainly, the continually diminishing numbers for Polio is a reminder of the impact that Rotarians - Gifts To The World, every one of you - have to remind the World's people that Rotary is THE Leader!

Of course, you've done so much more to help the World and Local Communities, more than I could possibly list here. Thanks for everything!

We're also continuing to face up to difficulties in our own District:

Bringing more Women and Millennials into the clubs

Lack of engagement by many members

Finding new leadership for the future, and training them to handle the challenges.

Adapting to technology and Social Media to improve and quicken communication.

We have a strong leadership group now, and for the foreseeable future, and we can, and will,   Adapt and overcome.

Here's to a peaceful 2016 for all of us, and the World.

District 6650 Conference
April 29 and 30

The Rotary Club of Bolivar- Zoar will be hosting this year’s District Conference. This Conference is designed to be both informative and entertaining. It is our goal to bring to the district’s club members a sampling of the taste, touch, feel and history of our very unique Tuscarawas county area. We are striving to provide all attendees with a truly memorable experience.

As our clubs grow and wane it becomes more important for all Rotarians to interact with each other as much as possible. The district conference gives us all an opportunity to do this. Come join us and celebrate Rotary with your fellow Rotarians. It is a whole new world. Let’s all strive to be the gift.

“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”
- Albert Schweitzer

District 6650 Youth Exchange Update
In December, District 6650’s Youth Exchange Committee conducted interviews for all students who applied to be an Outbound exchange student in 2016-2017.  Many Rotarians, and a few non-Rotarians, volunteered their time to interview the applicants and the applicants’ parents.  Fifteen students were selected to participate in the Outbound program.  The following students will begin their training to be an Outbound exchange student at the Wooster overnighter on January 9-10:

New District Global Grant: Agri-eco Organic Farming in the Philippines
Many of you will remember our Group Study Exchange Team from the Philippines during District Governor Jim Russell’s year in 2010.

Elayne Bozick, Rotary Club of Youngstown, has remained in contact with Tato (Dimayuga Fortunato), and on behalf of the Rotary Club Mataasnakahoy, our District has agreed to partner with their District for a Global Grant supporting Agri-eco organic farming for indigent farmers in that area. Elayne has personally seen the fine work this club has done on water projects during her GSE visit. Our District is excited to work with them on this project.

Our new Rotary Global Grant would provide education and support to institute organic farming techniques and improve the quality of life for members of the Organic Farmers Association who represent the indigent farmers and their families in Mataasnakahoy, Province of Batangas, in the Philippines.

Through the use of agri-eco organic farming techniques including vermicast (worm breakdown of organic matter), water systems and reservoirs, high value crop plantation, greenhouse construction, refurbishment of a multi-purpose building, and organic chicken egg production, the Association hopes to improve the quality of life in the community and the environment in general.

Our District has committed $10,000 in grant funds and the Rotary Club Mataasnakahoy $5,000. Rotary will match these grants to allow the project to go forward. We’ve raised several thousand dollars from our local Clubs for this grant.

If your Club hasn’t yet considered a donation, please do so. Forward donations to: Rotary Club of Youngstown, Attn Elayne Bozick /TRIF, 17 N Champion St., Youngstown, OH 44503

Rotary Club of Hubbard
"A Few People Can Make a BIG Impact"

The Hubbard Rotary Club was approached by a member of our community that had been to Kenya and worked first hand at a children's education center. She brought to our attention that there was no way for the teachers or staff to cook a hot meal for them or the children as the location was very remote and just recently received some electric service. After researching alternative cooking methods we found that Solar ovens, Parabolic Ovens to be exact, were extremely user friendly and would not cause a burden by bogging down the electrical service. We were able to partner with SolSource, a manufacturer of solar ovens who was able to line up shipping of one of their ovens to the Korando Educational Center in Kisumu Kenya. We are a smaller club with 18 members but are so happy to report the oven is working out wonderfully and is used daily to cook for nearly 80 people.

Rotary Club of Wooster
Busy November/December for Wooster Rotary…

The Wooster Rotary Al Van Wie Classic continues to grow and grow. The Classic is a multi-faceted event that now honors the memory of long-time Rotarian Al Van Wie, a former coach and athletic director at the College of Wooster. The Classic begins with a food collection challenge among local schools. Wooster Rotary then partners with the College of Wooster men’s basketball team to conduct a youth basketball clinic and a clinic for coaches. Admission to the clinic is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item, and around 100 boys and girls in grades 3-6 participate each year. The College of Wooster then kicks off their men’s basketball season with two games at which admission is granted with a food or monetary donation. Food and cash donations raised by Wooster Rotary’s Al Van Wie Classic benefit People to People Ministries, an agency that serves the emergency needs of Wayne County residents. Over 49,000 non-perishable food items were collected over the 2015 events and cash donations are still being collected. Food and cash donations from the Classic make an enormous impact on People to People’s ability to serve its clients over the holiday season and in the cold winter months.

At the November 23 club meeting, Wooster Rotary celebrated the 7th year of Parade of Flags. The Wooster Parade of Flags is subscription-based – subscribers receive an American flag installed at their home or business on each of five holidays (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Patriots Day, and Veterans Day). Wooster Rotarians, other service organizations, scout troops, church groups, and others all serviced various routes in 2015 to put up and take down 1855 flags for each holiday. Wooster Rotary shares the proceeds from the Parade of Flags. On November 23, over $16,600 was distributed to the not-for-profit partners who assisted Wooster Rotary on 2015 flag routes. Over the life of the Wooster Parade of Flags more than $85,000 has now been shared with area partners of Wooster Rotary.

At the November 30 meeting Wooster Rotary recognized five non-Rotarians as Paul Harris Fellows. It has become an annual tradition for Wooster Rotary to recognize non-Rotarians who have had a positive impact on the community. Congratulations to Paul Harris Fellows Jim Barnard, Brett Gough, Dr Thomas Graves, Steve Matthew, and Catherine Webster.

And on Monday, December 7 Wooster Rotary played host to 350 community seniors for the 50th Rotary Senior Dinner. Community seniors are welcomed to a concert given by the Wooster High School Orchestra and Choir before they are served a nice holiday meal in recognition of the season.
Wooster Rotary wishes all District 6650 clubs a terrific holiday season!

Best Regards,
Brent

The Rotary Club of Dover
The Dover Rotary sponsors The Dover Public Library's "Little Tornadoes Reading Club" each year. The reading club targets "reluctant readers," namely boys and aims to get them excited about reading by using football and the Dover High School Tornadoes football program as a means to do that. We do get plenty of girls though!  The kids (grades 3-5) are challenged to read a series of football related books and then are rewarded in many ways. We have the captains from the high school football team come to the library for a special Gridiron Storytime. The captains read to the kids, sign autographs, etc. Those that finish the reading program get a special membership card, a members-only t-shirt, and are invited to run out onto the field at Crater Stadium at a Friday night football game.
